What's "reddit cares"?
Main Post:
So I received this straight out of the blue yet my acct has never even made a post. Apparently this is supposed to be about being depressed or suicidal yet I haven't even posted or commented so how would people know that I'm either?
Is this some kind of spam or some kind of scam?

Why is being sent a Reddit care message controversial?
Main Post:
I’ve seen people say it’s meant to be some sort of clap back if people don’t like your opinion on something but I wonder how? I’ve seen it a lot on kpop subs

the entire system of Reddit Cares is supposed to be for people who see others on the internet who may be struggling with mental health or on the verge of ending their own life and reporting them to Reddit anonymously so the system can send the help they may need. It has hotline numbers, kind words, and so on.
The kpop subs, however, have begun to abuse this. As other comments have said, ppl send the messages to others when they disagree with another person’s comments in the same way a Twitter fanwar would have someone dm you “go kys“. This is just an edgier way of saying that through faux concern and a snarky remark of “you need help for your messed up mindset”.
I just felt the need to explain bc it’s not quite kill yourself, more just “you need to get help” bc of your opinions and words on Reddit.

Does anyone actually care about ghostty?
Main Post:
I've seen a numerous posts both here on Reddit and on YouTube about how this terminal is supposedly a "game changer" or "best terminal" etc, but I fail to see how it meaningfully improves on anything that actually matters.
It's website talks about how it's fast and "very feature rich" but the speed seems to be about the same alacrity and kitty in benchmarks. And since most people don't spend their time catting out binary blobs, you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference in speed for any real use case, even against so called "slow" terminals.
And the features it lists are really what I would consider the bare minimum, essentially taking an entire section to say it shows the text properly. Aside from that it has the kitty image protocol like kitty (obviously) and wezterm. The only differentiating factor as far is I can tell is that it's cross platform but also "native", which essentially boils down to the mac version looking different and having a few extra gimmicks.
And all this while having far less features than many of the options we already have such as iTerm2, kitty and wezterm. Wezterm for example, has everything in ghostty plus a multiplexing server supporting sessions, workspaces, tabs and splits that even works over ssh and other remote connections such as containers and WSL, and hot reloaded lua configuration providing a fully scriptable environment complete with a repl and debugger, and searchable scroll back and a built in ssh/serial port client and support for iTerm2 images as well as sixel. Not to mention it's actually cross platform with a fully functional windows version and a linux version that doesn't have major stability issues.
And I'm not trying to say that ghostty is bad, but I think the hype is entirely unreasonable given the great options we already have.

If you read Mitchell Hashimoto's Ghostty: Reflecting on Reaching 1.0 he has a whole section on why he didn't expect this much hype around the project and how it's just a pretty good terminal.
I didn't anticipate the hype. Some people think I am lying when I say this. I'm not. I'm not so naive to think that private betas and exclusive access don't generate hype in principle. But I didn't think many people at all would be interested in a terminal emulator. I thought I was building boring software for a niche audience. No hype!
...
One more negative aspect of the hype is the expectation of Ghostty being revolutionary. It is and it isn't. Ghostty has different goals and tradeoffs than other terminals. For those looking for those properties, Ghostty is a breath of fresh air and does things that no other terminal does. But for others, it's just a terminal. And that's okay. I hope you find a terminal that works for you and I don't claim that Ghostty is the end all be all of terminals.
